Invited to participate as a composer at the following

Exploratory Seminar Defining New Directions in Latin American and Latino Concert Music.

Executive Summary:
This seminar proposal is built around one main theme:
Defining and illustrating the specific directions taken by Latin American and Latino composition - and performance styles - in relation to the classical contemporary music discourses nurtured in modern Western Academia
Beyond the themes of cultural roots and identity, a discussion long surpassed, a web of interesting theoretical and practical branches of inquiry remain uncharted, the full description and study of which can certainly influence the direction of teaching, creating, and performing new music.
The Latin American musical continent is brimming with all possible forms of cultural hybridization between Amerindian, Hispanic, African, Middle Eastern, and North American music.
The conceptual cornucopia deriving from these combinations, from the coexistence of cultural strata involved in the mix, is an important ingredient in the new wave of Latin American concert music. The seminar will explore the field with specialists, creators, and theoreticians.

Surprised to be asked to be a part of this, as I believe, I am the only non academic
in attendance

Dwight Trible is a rarity. Few singing careers involve performing with  the legendary likes of Pharaoh Sanders, Kenny Garrett and Charles Lloyd,  whilst also producing and innovating music with contemporary artists, ranging from J Dilla to Kamasi Washington.

co-created by the National Compadres Network and The Brotherhood of Elders,
we will invite the insights of cultural wisdom keepers, healers, social advocates

DECEMBER

DON PRESTON TRIO CONCERT
VIA THE WORLD STAGE

THE DON PRESTON TRIO

DON PRESTON
AKA
BIFF DE BRIS,
DOM DE WILD,
OGO MOTO,
UNCLE MEAT
Don Preston
- pianoforte, whatknots
Anders Swanson
- acoustic bass
Christopher Garcia
- drumset, percussion

"Don is one of the pioneers in that whole area, I don't think he gets nearly enough
credit for the contributions he has made and the vast amount of knowledge he has
acquired in electronic music."
JOHN CARTER

"the guy that really impressed me was Don Preston, I didn't know what that stuff
was when I heard it on Frank Zappa's records. I said, "Man!"
GEORGE DUKE

"Preston not only brought his skewed piano sensibility into the creative jazz context, he lugged along a little of his zany synthesizer as well........touching on all these associations (Carla and Paul Bley, John Carter, Zappa and Cole Porter), showing what he can do twisting a standard around and delving a bit into his own compositional bag as well. Preston resides on the edge of tonality, toying with it."
DOWNBEAT

"revisiting choice moments of weirdness and glory, as well as dig into original works and unlikely standards, is not to be missed. The range of program is somewhat camouflaged by the seamless interply of Preston and cohorts. They possess a cohesion born of fluidity that is reminiscent of Paul Bley’s 60’s trios, but they have their own crisp edge. It is a high common denominator for such a diverse program."
JAZZTIMES

"best known as the first synth wielding Mother of Invention - Frank Zappa's keyboardist aide de camp, to others he is an avowed New Music experimentalist, whose work in theatre, and with assorted sonic daredevils is the stuff of underground
acclaim.......in the jazz orbit Preston's credits have included Gil Evans, Carla Bley, Buell Niedlinger, Michael Mantler, John Carter, and Bobby Bradford"
DOWNBEAT

"Preston demonstrated anew that he is one of the most consistently exciting keyboardists anywhere, he plays with an intensity and a rhythmic vitality that approached the demonic, at climactic moments smashing the keys with a forearm and elbow, as if the piano were just not instrument enough for him"
LA JAZZ SCENE

"Bassist Anders Swanson and drummer Christopher Garcia have a tough tensile strength to their rhythm with flexibility that allows for metric disembodiment......"
GLENDALE NEWS PRESS

"Garcia is an absolute lunatic..."
METRO MUSIC, CZECH REPUBLIC

"the man understands the art of drumming - tight,
flawless and full of passion, he goes on in his solo and then seamlessly continues. Very very good."
DUTCH PUBLIC BROADCASTING

"Because Zappa played drums before he played guitar, he always got a great drummer, you know, so we had to do that too," said Preston of Garcia, who is known around the world for being an expert tabla player, but can also drum out a hell of a rock and roll beat. "
DON PRESTON

"Christopher "Chris" Garcia, born in East Los Angeles, California, plays countless percussion instruments and is a composer in many musical ethnological environments such as his family home Mexico......he has made a living as a world musician and has drummed for the "Grand Mothers of Invention" as well as for the classical conductors Kristjan Järvi or various chamber music ensembles."
ZAPPANALE.DE

"Behind the drums, the beefy cragster with the bushy ponytail turns out to be none other than Christopher Garcia, who has jacked up the expressions of his Quarteto Nuevo, Continuum, Alex Cline, Vinny Golia, ZAPPA alumni the Grand Mothers,
Dottie Grossman and your uncle the bartender.
(And he credits Sab tubsman Bill Ward as an influence.)"

TORRANCE MUSIC LIBRARY
presents

MUSIC AND INSTRUMENTS OF INDIA
with
Pablo Calogero - bansuri, bass flute, tenor saxophone
and
myself - North Indian tabla, South Indian ghatam and kanjira
playing traditional, classical and contemporary music of India

"Garcia also revels in playing the new and unexpected…..his musical vocabulary
not  only spans centuries and cultures it's also spontaneous."
DEUTSCHE WELLE
GERMANYS INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTER

"Then there’s Christopher Garcia…. I heard and saw the spirit of his connection to the earth,
to the soil from which we all come, and to the cosmos of which we are all a part. He reminded
me through the sound of instrument and voice, of who and what I am and  that I need to be
reminded of that aspect of self again and again."
KUCI

"A project devised and led by gifted multi-percussionist Christopher Garcia, an artist known equally for his accomplishments as both adept player of North and South Indian instruments such as tabla and driving American drum set player) with the likes of the Frank Zappa alumni band, The Grand Mothers of Invention and the Bobby Bradford Mo’tet), the group reflects Garcia’s ongoing interest in honoring, exploring, and blending different musical cultures and their unique instruments. In this case, Garcia combines his tabla, mbwata, frame drums, baa wehai, and Paiste metals with the pipa, ruan, and other Chinese string instruments of the wonderful Jie Ma and the sitar of the gifted and versatile John Stephens. With Garcia always successful in his role as multicultural musical ambassador as well as sensitive and tasteful manifestor of thoroughly enjoyable musical experiences, this trio is sure to fascinate and satisfy."
OPEN GATE THEATER

"A drum solo by Garcia is deployed, (the man understands the art of drumming) tight,
flawless and full of passion, he goes on in his solo and then seamlessly continues.
Very very good."
DUTCH PUBLIC BROADCASTING

“I know Christopher Garcia ... he is an angel from above. We have been working over 3 years touring and everything else, and many times we rehearse, all the time,  as music is not my profession, Music is my passion, Music is my LIFE, see…..We are always rehearsing so many times, and Chris used to come, he is one of the busiest percussions on earth, he is incredible, he also plays South Indian percussion, clay ghatam, kanjira and everything else......”
L. SHANKAR

"Garcia’s drumming cut through, complemented, and grounded the reverberating echoes
of L. Shankar’s masterful slides on the violin throughout the hall. ... Highlights included Garcia’s percussion solo in the fifth composition, in which he built upon various rhythms for several uninterrupted minutes, beating tabla, kanjira and ghatam,  including tapping his face to a fascinating effect..... "Christopher Garcia is a critically acclaimed percussionist, composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and multi-instrumentalist ……he is known in different circles for various reasons: either as a composer or performer either on drum set, percussion instruments of North and South India, marimba, or instruments of indigenous Mexico/Mesoamerica….. he had the privilege of receiving a full scholarship at California Institute of the Arts where he studied tabla with Pandit Taranath Rao, Leonice Shinneman, and Swapan Chaudhuri, and tabla , ghatam and kanjira with John Bergamo. In 1976, his mentor John Bergamo was asked to perform with Shakti in Canada and 40 years later Christopher was honored to be the first Westerner to be invited by L. Shankar (aka Shenkar) to perform Indian classical music with him. His compositions for woodwind quintet, pedal harp, classical guitar, pipa, piano, and percussion of India and Mesoamerica continue to be performed in the Americas and Europe."

bells and cymbals and all  sorts of things all at the same time."
KPFK GLOBAL VILLAGE

"Christopher Garcia, a multi-faceted percussionist, added an eclectic array of musical instruments from Mexico, India, and other places creating an imaginative array of sounds along with the movement."

"We hear a variety of percussion, including instruments from Mexico and MesoAmerica.   They sing and throb to the pulse of a single person, Christopher Garcia. He produces an extraordinary array of sound and rhythms, effortlessly weaving in and out of familiar Indian patterns to those of traditional MesoAmerica but we know we are not in India. This is the music and dance ......."
