Exploratory Seminar Defining New Directions in Latin American and Latino Concert Music.
Executive Summary:
This seminar proposal is built around one main theme:
Defining and illustrating the specific directions taken by Latin American and Latino composition - and performance styles - in relation to the classical contemporary music discourses nurtured in modern Western Academia
Beyond the themes of cultural roots and identity, a discussion long surpassed, a web of interesting theoretical and practical branches of inquiry remain uncharted, the full description and study of which can certainly influence the direction of teaching, creating, and performing new music.
The Latin American musical continent is brimming with all possible forms of cultural hybridization between Amerindian, Hispanic, African, Middle Eastern, and North American music.
The conceptual cornucopia deriving from these combinations, from the coexistence of cultural strata involved in the mix, is an important ingredient in the new wave of Latin American concert music. The seminar will explore the field with specialists, creators, and theoreticians.
Surprised to be asked to be a part of this, as I believe, I am the only non academic
in attendance

Luis Pérez Ixoneztli & Christopher Garcia The Infinite Expansion of Sound"INFINITE EXPANSION OF SND,
the collaborative project of multi-instrumentalist Luis Pérez Ixoneztli and percussionist Christopher Garcia, is a meticulous sonic exploration conceived as one set of uninterrupted music that incorporates contemporary as well as traditional elements performed on a vast array of percussion and wind instruments from Mesoamerica including Pre-Columbian and ethnographic artifacts and ritual chants sung in various native Mexican languages along with gongs, suspended metals, and percussion of the world creating a SOUND and RESONANCE that has never been heard before.
Luis Pérez Ixoneztli was born in Mexico City on July 11, 1951. From 1971 onwards he dedicated much of his time to the research of the pre-Columbian instrumentation of Mesoamerica. This research allowed him to travel the Mexican territory and study musical traditions of the native peoples of Mexico. He learned directly from the living sources of the music and collected samples of musical instruments and the songs of different native speakers including Maya, Nahuatl, Mazateco, Yoemem, Comcaac, Raramuri, Wixarika and more.
Christopher Garcia - composer, culture bearer, drummer, educator, ethnomusicologist, father, grand father,
great grand father, human being, husband, improviser, musicial, multi instrumentalist, percussionist continues
to garner popular and critical acclaim on 5 continents making music as a performer/composer/improviser on drumset, percussion of North and South India, indigenous percussion of Mexico/Mesoamerica avant garde percussion in creative improvised music El Monstro - a hand/finger/foot/electronics percussion set up ZAPPA music and/or western classical percussion in an eclectic variety of musical settings with a vast array of musical artists ranging from jazz, rock, indigenous, chamber and symphonic music, classical and world music settings with over 1200 performances in 28 countries on 5 continents.

Sacred Sounds & Medicine Music
at
The Art of Living Los Angeles Center
948 West Adams Blvd,
Los Angeles, CA 90007
@
7 PM
On May 2 at The Art of Living Center,
Medicine Man and National Treasure
Luis Perez Ixonexztil
will create a sacred sound bath from thousands of years ago.
The music he creates is not of this time, and there are those that feel this medicine
music take participants into another realm where unexpected transformation takes place.
As a Pre-Columbian musician, Ixonexztil’s instruments include 3500 year-old flutes and
whistles made from bones and bee’s wings. He combines these elements with gongs, hanging
metals and indigenous chants to create a vibrational experience like no other.
We are thrilled that he is here as this is his final performance before leaving the country.
Come join us for a powerful opportunity that at the same time is so visually stunning you may not want to lay down.
As Tom Schnabel of KCRW’s Rhythm Planet said:
“It is some of the most unusual, otherworldly music I have ever heard…. I only wish it had been filmed. It was not only amazing to hear, but to watch as well.”
Teaming up with sonic artist Mari Fix of the Fragrance of Sound,
and composer/performer/improviser
Christopher Garcia
Ixonexztil takes full advantage of the receptive,
elevated space of The Art of Living’s Los Angeles Center.
Come join us on May 2 at 7pm and share i
n this powerful experience that happens once in a lifetime.
Note:
Yoga mats are provided. You may want to bring blankets and pillows to bundle up.
You can lay down or sit up, close your eyes or keep them open.
Parking: A small parking lot off Hoover fills quickly. Adequate street parking is available.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
saddened to hear that the
world lost Michel Coe
a true radical,
loved his books, lectures, interviews and personality
Michael D. Coe
(1929 - Sept 25,2019)
was an American archaeologist,
anthropologist,
epigrapher and author.
Primarily known for his research in the field of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican studies (and in particular, for his work on the Maya civilization, where he is regarded as one of the foremost Mayanist scholars of the latter 20th century), Coe also made extensive investigations across a variety of other archaeological sites in North and South America.
He specialized in comparative studies of ancient tropical forest civilizations, such as those of Central America and Southeast Asia. He (as of 2005) held the chair of Charles J. MacCurdy Professor of Anthropology, Emeritus, Yale University, and was Curator Emeritus of the Anthropology collection in the Peabody Museum of Natural History, where he had been Curator from 1968 to 1994.

Miguel León-Portilla
(22 February 1926 – 1 October 2019)
was a Mexican anthropologist and historian,
and a major authority on Aztec thought and
literature in the prehispanic and colonial eras.
Many of his works have been translated to
English and are widely read.
The Library of Congress of the United States
bestowed on him the Living Legend Award in 2013.
