México Atemporal is a series of musical compositions and improvisations that surge from an ongoing exploration of the symbiosis between indigenous instruments of Mexico and Mesoamerica, the pianoforte, and the electronic manipulation of sound in real time.
This exploration is guided and based in the study of Mesoamerican codex, the Mexica dance tradition, and the study of classical
and jazz pianist and composers such as Cage, Debussy, Armengol and Bill Evans. This unique collaboration between Christopher Garcia and Pablo Leñero seeks to intertwine the resonances of the past and present of Mexico.
Christopher Garcia is a performer, composer and improviser who continues to garner popular and critical acclaim in 29 countries on 5 continents for his original compositions for indigenous breath and percussion instruments of Mesoamerica/Mexico and India alongside either classical guitar, marimba, pedal harp, piano, violin, woodwind quintet and/or mixed chamber ensemble. Garcia is frequently invited as a guest soloist to perform with chamber and symphonic orchestras throughout Europe and the Americas on instruments not usually associated with “western classical music”, including North Indian tabla, South Indian kanjira and ghatam, and Tlapan huehuetl, teponaztli, huilacapiztli, atecocolli and more.
Pablo Leñero Archer is a Mexican composer, pianist and conductor based in L.A. Through his studies of the music of Bach, Beethoven, Cage, Armengol, Debussy and Bill Evans, Leñero explores the integration of the classical realm with the folkloric and indigenous traditions of Mexico and the Americas. In his music, Leñero experiments with alternative media and materials as part of the process of music creation, such as the use of paintings and colors as scores, as well as using the physical space as a mean of musical expression.

ANADIS MUSIC REVIEWS
"A project devised and led by gifted multi-percussionist Christopher Garcia, an artist known equally for his accomplishments as both adept player of North and South Indian instruments such as table and driving American drum set player) with the likes of The Mothers of Invention and the Bobby Bradford Mo’tet) and jazz fusion monsters CONTINUUM. The group reflects Garcia’s ongoing interest in honoring, exploring, and blending different musical cultures and their unique instruments. In this case, Garcia combines his tabla, mbwata, frame drums, baa wehai, and Paiste metals with the sarod, sitar and surbahar of the gifted and versatile John Stephens. With Garcia always successful in his role as multicultural musical ambassador as well as sensitive and tasteful manifestor of thoroughly enjoyable musical experiences, this ensemble is sure to fascinate and satisfy. “
OPEN GATE THEATRE
"Garcia’s drumming cut through, complemented, and grounded the reverberating echoes of L. Shankar’s masterful slides on the violin throughout the hall. Highlights included Garcia’s percussion solo in the fifth composition, in which he built upon various rhythms for several uninterrupted minutes, playing every drum in front of him, to fascinating effect….”
WESLEYAN ARGUS
"Christopher Garcia, a multi-faceted percussionist, added an eclectic array of musical instruments from Mexico, India, and other places creating an imaginative array of sounds along with the movement."
NARTHAKI.COM
"We hear a variety of percussion, including instruments from Mexico and MesoAmerica. They sing and throb to the pulse of a single person, Christopher Garcia. He produces an extraordinary array of sound and rhythms, effortlessly weaving in and out of familiar Indian patterns to those of traditional Central America but we know we are not in India.”
SRUTI MAGAZINE
INDIAS PREMIER MAGAZINE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
"Christopher Garcia is a most uncommon percussionist. He’s an ace trap drum player; known for precise execution of difficult time signatures at blazing tempos; and he’s a hand percussionist with a deep background in Indian and Latin American music. No mere timekeeper, he always seems to elevate whatever musical situation he finds himself in. "
PASADENA WEEKLY
"Christopher Garcia is one of those musicians who always seems to be on stage when amazing things are happening. I'm not sure he knows how many different groups he's currently playing in, but it's a lot. In addition to teaching all over the world, he's played with a jaw-dropping who's-who of musical luminaries...... Although he's a phenomenal drummer, he may be best known as a master of Vedic percussion techniques and, specifically, the tabla. "
LONG BEACH POST
"Christopher Garcia's playing is vibrant and alive with passion, humor and a good deal of technical prowess, not to mention the breadth of vision necessary to effectively translate such an unpredictable
stream of music."
THE WEEKLY ALIBI
"Christopher Garcia has been a great friend of KPFK’s Global Village because
he plays the most extraordinary music on the most extraordinary instruments
with the most extraordinary musicians and the music is exquisite....
He's amazing to watch, talk about having a split personality, it's funny
because his fingers are flying, and he has all of the syllables available and
he's holding a stick with his right hand, a shaker with his toes, and hitting
bells and cymbals and all sorts of things all at the same time."

THE STORY OF RAMONA
Heidi Duckler Dance presents the world premiere of The Story of Ramona for two nights only on Sunday, September 16 & Sunday, September 23 at 7:00pm at
The San Gabriel Mission Playhouse,
320 S Mission Dr,
San Gabriel, CA 91776.
RAMONA is inspired by the quintessential California story of the same name, written in 1884 by Helen Hunt Jackson. A west-coast coming-of-age story, Ramona was wildly popular across the country during a time when pageants were all the rage at the turn of the 19th century. Amplifying the golden romantic myth of California, Ramona became used as a branding tool for the state, and was a leading driver for people to migrate there from all across the country. Prophetically, the novel articulates themes of female empowerment; themes that are still relevant today. Now, more than ever, it is essential that people in our communities - especially young women - be exposed to stories that celebrate strong female role-models who have played a major part in shaping the history of California, like Ramona. Setting the production at the historic Mission Playhouse, which is said to be the birthplace of Ramona, provides the perfect opportunity for audiences to discover the cultural significance of the story through dance and contemporary American music.
Choreographed & Directed by Heidi Duckler, this work features Heidi Duckler Dance's company dancers, Lenin Fernandez, Roberto Lambaren, Ryan Walker Page, Rafael Quintas, Rosanna Tavarez and Himerria Wortham accompanied by live indigenous instrumentation by Chris Garcia, live violin by Israel Heller and live Spanish guitar byGabriel Deutsch alongside celebrity goats, Spanky & Pippin!
This production is part of the Mission Playhouse's Community Engagement Program, Engage! and is supported by 5th District Supervisor, Kathryn Barger, Board of Supervisors County of Los Angeles.
Tickets:
$50.00 - General Admission
$35.00 - Heidi Duckler Dance Members

L. SHANKAR
INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSICL. Shankar – double violin, vocals
Abhijit Banerjee – tabla
Christopher Garcia – ghatam (clay pot), kanjira (frame drum)
“Dazzling virtuosity.” – The London Times .
schimmelcenter.org/event/l-shankar-aka-l-shenkar
L. Shankar (aka L. Shenkar) is a virtuoso violinist and vocalist renowned for his deeply soulful performances of Indian classical music. He introduced a new instrument, a 10-string double violin capable of covering the whole range of the orchestra’s string section from violin to double bass. With this innovative violin he has continued to expand the international audience for Indian music, often combining North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) styles. In this rare New York appearance, he will be accompanied by tablamaestro Abhijit Banerjee and percussionist Chris Garcia, who will play the South Indian ghatam (clay pot) and kanjira (frame drum).
"SHENKAR, with his five-and-a-half octave vocal range, engrossed audiences with his unparalleled vocal ability over a skillful series of plucks and bends on his 10-string stereophonic double violin."
HARTFORD COURANT
"the violinist focuses on the traditional ragas of his native India, with two extended pieces….Shankar produces a wealth of solo climaxes while weaving myriad thematic improvisations. On the first raga he moves from a meditative solo stretch to some frenetic interplay eventually ending the piece with an incredible, lightening-fast display of technique. The group opt for a more even-keeled pace on the
second raga. Shankar is impressive again….. an essential disc for L. Shankar fans."
ALL MUSIC GUIDE
"With his double violin and his unmistakable haunting voice he performed an evening of ragas for The Music Circle in the traditional Carnatic or South Indian tradition of his musical beginnings......"
PERFORMING ARTS LIVE Los Angeles
"SHENKAR is one of the world's most illustrious violinist, No surprise then that the
best contemporary artists have called upon the services of the Madras violinist to
enhance their music. "
MONTREAL JAZZ FEST
“Tamilian violinist SHANKAR offers listeners a beautiful and powerful experience ....he plays a 10-stringed instrument of his own design, and his personal hand in its construction is as deeply evident as his playing of it. Over a steady drone of tamboura and attuned rhythmic support Shankar’s flights of improvisation are free to soar. His melodies are driven by deep recognition of intent, visceral and immediate.”
ECM RECORDS
"SHENKAR, acclaimed virtuoso violinist, singer, composer and producer is a musical pioneer...He embraces with equal ease three idioms of music: Indian classical, world music and pop/rock."
HINDUISM TODAY
"SHENKAR has played with jazz and rock musicians, including John McLaughlin and Frank Zappa….The bravura South Indian classical style, with its emphasis on rhythmic drive and virtuosity, lends itself well to the contemporary fusion music idiom……..he brought to it something of the inventiveness
and intensity that are so evident in his jazz and rock works."
NEW YORK TIMES
"SHENKAR, as well as being a top player in both the Western and Indian classical
traditions uses his dazzling virtuosity to full effect in rock and jazz fusions with such
artists as Peter Gabriel, Jan Garbarek, and Frank Zappa He has an astounding
double necked 10-stringed electric violin giving him the full range of the string quartet "
LONDON TIMES
"Garcia’s drumming cut through, complemented, and grounded the reverberating echoes of SHENKARS masterful slides on the violin throughout the hall. Highlights included Garcia’s percussion solo in the fifth composition, in which he built upon various rhythms for several uninterrupted minutes…..”
WESLEYAN ARGUS
"We hear a variety of world percussion, including instruments from Noath and South India, Mexico and MesoAmerica. They sing and throb to the pulse of a single person, Christopher Garcia, who produces an extraordinary array of sound and rhythms, effortlessly weaving in and out of familiar Indian patterns......
SRUTI MAGAZINE
INDIAS PREMIER MAGAZINE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
“Garcia revels in playing the new and unexpected…..his musical vocabulary
not only spans centuries and cultures it's also spontaneous."
DEUTSCHE WELLE
GERMANYS INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTER
"Christopher Garcia, a multi-faceted percussionist, added an eclectic array of musical instruments from Mexico, India, and other places creating an imaginative array of sounds along with the movement."
